The earliest known piece of Christian apologetics, famous for its beautiful description of the relationship of Christians with the world.
"Mathetes" is probably a pseudonym; it just means 'disciple'. The writer is a bit odd, as he uses arguments from the Old Testament against Greek idolatry, and then criticizes Jewish customs as if he discounted the Old Testament's inspiration. He also exhibits a touch of Greek or Manichaean distrust of the material body. But his enthusiasm for Jesus and the Church is very clear.
